What is Homeopathy?

The practice of Homeopathy was developed in the early 1800's by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, an Austrian physician. During the malaria outbreak of the 1800's Dr. Hahnemann experimented on himself and others whom did not have malaria, with the traditional remedy of the times, liquid tincture of the Peruvian Cinchona Tree. He was astonished to learn that the remedy which was commonly used to treat symptoms in ill patients actually caused those same symptoms in healthy patients. Dr. Hahnemann wrote: " If a medicine administered to a healthy person caused a certain syndrome of symptoms, that same medicine will cure a sick person who presents similar symptoms." From these experiments the theory of " Like cures Like" was developed.

Because many of the plants and herbs used for remedies are toxic in their pure form, Dr. Hahnemann also discovered that by diluting his preparations in stages, he could maintain their effectiveness while eliminating their toxicity. This is why homeopathic remedies come in a specific diluted form, rather than in a Mother Tincture of pure form. The remedies are thus chosen, not to reduce or eliminate symptoms, but rather because they cause those same symptoms in a healthy patient.
